What this covers

Counseling, therapy, psychiatric services, crisis hotlines, peer support groups, grief counseling, PTSD support, anxiety and depression treatment, and community mental health centers.

Does not cover: Inpatient psychiatric hospitalization (call 988 or 911 for crisis). For substance use treatment, see Substance Use & Recovery.

Who is this for?

Anyone experiencing emotional distress, mental health challenges, or who needs someone to talk to. You do not need a diagnosis to seek help.

How help usually works

Crisis lines are available 24/7 by phone or text. Peer support groups are free and ongoing. Outpatient counseling is available on sliding scales at community mental health centers. Many services are now available via telehealth.

Typical timeline: Crisis support is immediate. Peer groups are ongoing. Counseling appointments typically take 1-3 weeks to schedule, though some centers have same-week availability.

Best first steps

  1. If you're in crisis right now, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) — it's free, confidential, 24/7.
  2. For ongoing support, search for a community mental health center near you — many offer counseling on a sliding scale.
  3. Peer support groups (like NAMI) are free and don't require a referral.
  4. If you have insurance, call the number on your card to find covered providers.

What to bring

Nothing is required for crisis lines or peer support. For counseling appointments, bring insurance cards if you have them and a list of current medications.

Emergency vs. standard help

Emergency: Call 988, text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line), or call 911. Standard: Schedule outpatient counseling or join a peer support group.
