Youth & Teen Help
You are not alone. Whether you are a runaway, facing danger at home, or just need someone to talk to — help is available right now, no questions asked.
What this covers
Youth shelters, runaway services, after-school programs, mentoring, youth mental health, teen crisis support, job readiness for young people, and youth development programs.
Does not cover: K-12 school enrollment or college admissions. For family support, see Family. For baby/infant needs, see Baby & Infant Essentials.
Who is this for?
Young people ages 12-24 who need support — whether it's a safe place to stay, mentoring, mental health help, or job readiness.
How help usually works
Youth shelters accept young people 24/7 without parental consent (in most states). Crisis text lines provide confidential support. After-school and mentoring programs offer ongoing connection and development.
Best first steps
- If you're a young person who needs a safe place, call Covenant House or a local youth shelter — you can go without your parents' permission.
- Crisis Text Line: Text HOME to 741741 for free, confidential support 24/7.
- For after-school programs and mentoring, contact your local community center or Boys & Girls Club.
- For job readiness, look for YouthBuild, Year Up, or Job Corps programs in your area.
What to bring
Nothing is required at youth shelters. Bring a school ID if you have one.
Emergency vs. standard help
Emergency: Call 911 if in danger, or text HOME to 741741 for crisis support. Standard: Connect with youth programs for ongoing mentoring and development.
What kind of help is available?
Safe shelter
Youth shelters and safe houses for teens who need a place to stay tonight. Most do not require ID and do not contact parents without your permission if you are in danger.
Crisis hotlines
Free, confidential phone and text lines staffed by people who understand what you are going through. Available 24 hours, 7 days a week.
Mental health
Counseling, therapy, and peer support for youth. You do not have to feel this alone. Many programs are free or low-cost.
Legal help
If you are being hurt, trafficked, or have legal issues — there are advocates who work specifically with young people and keep what you share confidential.
