Who is this for?
Anyone struggling with alcohol, drugs, or other substance use — or their family members seeking guidance.
How help usually works
SAMHSA's helpline (1-800-662-4357) provides free referrals 24/7. Detox programs provide medical supervision during withdrawal. Outpatient programs allow treatment while living at home. MAT uses medications like Suboxone to support recovery.
Best first steps
- Call SAMHSA's helpline: 1-800-662-4357 (free, confidential, 24/7) for referrals to local treatment.
- If you need detox, go to an ER or call 211 — they can find an available bed.
- For harm reduction (naloxone, clean supplies), search for a harm reduction program near you.
- Recovery support groups (AA, NA, SMART Recovery) are free and don't require sobriety to attend.
What to bring
Photo ID and insurance cards if you have them. Many programs accept people without insurance. For residential treatment, bring 3-7 days of clothing and personal items.
Emergency vs. standard help
Emergency: If someone is overdosing, call 911 and administer naloxone if available. Standard: Call SAMHSA or a local treatment center to discuss options.
