Disability Help
Independent living support, vocational rehabilitation, adaptive equipment, benefits navigation, and disability rights advocacy. Services exist for every disability type — physical, developmental, sensory, and cognitive.
What this covers
Independent living services, vocational rehabilitation, adaptive equipment, personal care attendants, SSI/SSDI benefits help, accessibility services, and disability rights advocacy.
Does not cover: General medical care (see Health) or mental health counseling without disability focus (see Mental Health).
Who is this for?
People with physical, developmental, sensory, or cognitive disabilities who need services, accommodations, employment help, or benefits navigation.
How help usually works
Centers for independent living provide peer support, skills training, and advocacy. Vocational rehabilitation helps with job placement and accommodations. Benefits navigators help with SSI/SSDI applications.
Best first steps
- Contact your local center for independent living — they serve all disability types and are peer-run.
- For employment help, contact your state's vocational rehabilitation agency — they provide job training, placement, and workplace accommodations.
- If you need SSI or SSDI, a benefits navigator can help with the application — denial rates are high but appeals often succeed.
- For adaptive equipment or home modifications, ask your doctor for a referral to occupational therapy.
What to bring
Medical documentation of disability, SSI/SSDI award letter (if applicable), proof of income, and a photo ID.
Emergency vs. standard help
Emergency: Call 911 for medical emergencies. Standard: Contact a center for independent living for ongoing support and advocacy.
